The Algerian Football Federation announced on Monday that it has parted ways with national team head coach Vladimir Petkovic. The decision to terminate the 62-year-old’s tenure was reached through a mutual agreement between the federation and the Bosnian manager, effectively ending his time with the coaching staff.
Petkovic initially took charge of the Desert Warriors in February 2024. Despite having signed a contract extension that was intended to keep him at the helm until 2028, the partnership concluded shortly after the team’s appearance at the 48-team World Cup in North America. During the tournament, Algeria qualified for the round of 32 as one of the eight best third-placed teams but were ultimately eliminated following a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland.
The federation’s statement confirmed the immediate departure as both parties look to move in a different direction. Algeria is now tasked with finding a successor before the start of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaign. The team is scheduled to begin those qualifiers in September, having been drawn into Group I alongside Zambia, Togo, and Burundi.
