Koeman Keeps Depay Hungry After He Equals Van Persie’s Record

Memphis Depay was denied the chance to seal a hat-trick — and the outright Dutch all-time scoring record — in the Netherlands’ dominant 8-0 win over Malta on Tuesday, as coach Ronald Koeman opted to substitute him early to keep him motivated.

Depay struck twice in the opening 16 minutes of the World Cup qualifier, bringing his international tally to 50 goals and equaling Robin van Persie’s record. Both players now share the top spot with 50 goals in 102 appearances for the national team.

“I’ve equaled Van Persie — that makes me happy,” Depay said. “But this is just a milestone. I’m going for 51, 52, 53 and more. Maybe I could’ve gotten one more tonight if I had stayed on.”

The 30-year-old forward, taken off in the 72nd minute with the Netherlands leading 4-0, didn’t complain about the decision.

“I didn’t say anything about being subbed early. I was just happy to be doing what I’ve done for years — scoring goals.”

Depay netted his first international goal at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, but his journey with the national team has seen ups and downs.

“There’s been a lot of change — different coaches, different teammates. But all of it has shaped me and clarified what I want. Now it’s about qualifying for the World Cup and going deep into the tournament.”

Koeman, who has stood by Depay through both of his tenures as national team boss, praised the striker’s resilience and form.

“Memphis is a special player. He deserves real credit — he’s had a tough year with injuries, but now he’s fit, sharp, and hungry,” said Koeman.

“And it’s actually good he didn’t get that third goal — it’ll keep him hungry for more,” he added with a smile.
