The Oakland Athletics delivered a commanding 7–0 shutout victory over the New York Yankees on Sunday, riding strong pitching and timely power hitting to secure a rare win in the Bronx.
JP Sears, a former Yankee, led the way for Oakland with 5⅔ scoreless innings, giving up just two hits while striking out four. It was a statement outing for the left-hander, who improved to 6–7 on the season.
The A’s opened the scoring in the fourth inning with a solo home run from Brent Rooker, snapping Yankees starter Clarke Schmidt’s 28⅓-inning scoreless streak. In the sixth, Oakland extended their lead when rookie Nick Kurtz crushed a three-run homer to deep right-center, pushing the score to 4–0.
Oakland added three more runs in the eighth inning with contributions from Tyler Soderstrom (sacrifice fly) and an infield single combined with a defensive miscue.
Clarke Schmidt, who had been in excellent form, took the loss for New York, allowing four runs on four hits in six innings. The Yankees’ bats were ice cold, producing only two hits and going 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.
The shutout marked the sixth time this season the Yankees have been held scoreless, a troubling trend for a team with postseason ambitions. Sluggers like Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and Paul Goldschmidt continued to struggle at the plate.
