Bangladesh crumbled under pressure in the opening ODI against Sri Lanka, suffering a heavy defeat that sets a grim tone for the series. A lacklustre batting display saw the visitors bundled out for just 168, handing Sri Lanka an easy 6-wicket victory with more than 15 overs to spare.
💥 The damage began early. Bangladesh’s top order looked shaky against the Lankan pace attack, with wickets tumbling in clusters. Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam offered brief resistance with the ball, but the total was never enough.
For Sri Lanka, it was all about control and execution. Kusal Mendis anchored the chase with a calm and composed 65*, while Wanindu Hasaranga starred with the ball, picking up 4 for 28 and choking the Bangladeshi middle order.
🗣️ Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto admitted the team fell short in all departments:
“We didn’t apply ourselves. Credit to Sri Lanka — they were sharper and hungrier.”
This loss raises questions ahead of the second ODI. Bangladesh must regroup fast, or risk letting the series slip away.
