Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha has secured a move to Chilean giants Colo-Colo, fulfilling his long-held ambition to play for a major club following his standout performances at the FIFA World Cup. The 40-year-old joined the record 34-time Chilean champions after departing Portuguese second-tier side Chaves, having previously played in Angola, Cyprus, Moldova, and Slovakia.
“Despite playing in smaller leagues for clubs that weren’t exactly giants, deep down I always told myself I was a ‘big club’ player,” Vozinha told reporters on Tuesday. He noted that while he received multiple offers, Colo-Colo was his clear priority from the start. “Being here representing Colo-Colo – a massive club with a rich history – is the highlight of my club career.”
Vozinha became a social media sensation during the tournament, playing a crucial role in helping the small African island nation advance past the group stage. Cape Verde’s historic debut included a 0-0 draw against eventual winners Spain, as well as draws against two-time champions Uruguay and Saudi Arabia to finish second in Group H. The team was eventually eliminated following a narrow defeat to Argentina in the round of 32.
Reflecting on his international success, the veteran goalkeeper remains focused on his new chapter in Chile. “The World Cup was the best thing that ever happened to me in football, but that is in the past now,” he said. With his transition to South American football complete, Vozinha is now set to bring his experience to one of the continent’s most storied institutions.
