Just before the tour of Australia, he was relieved of his leadership duties, with Litton Das taking over as captain and Towhid Hridoy named vice-captain. BCB President Tamim Iqbal noted that while Miraz had been a successful leader—winning four out of five series—the board wanted him to return to his natural form as an all-rounder without the burden of captaincy.
Miraz provided an immediate response to his critics upon arriving in Australia. During the first day of the warm-up match against Cricket Australia XI at Marara Oval, Bangladesh found themselves in a precarious position at 105 for 5. Entering the crease at number seven, Miraz began a rebuilding effort. Despite a lack of support from the top order, he anchored the innings. When the ninth wicket fell at 194, it appeared the team would struggle to reach 200, but Miraz partnered with Khaled Ahmed to add 69 runs for the final wicket, pushing the team’s total to 263.
Miraz reached his half-century in 75 balls before accelerating his scoring, completing his next fifty runs in just 53 deliveries. He remained unbeaten on 109 off 141 balls, an innings highlighted by 11 fours and 4 sixes. Reflecting on his performance, Miraz stated that the start was difficult due to the bowlers’ precision, so he focused on playing on merit. He acknowledged that adapting to Australian conditions took time, adding that he prioritized staying at the crease and building partnerships rather than focusing on the scoreboard early on.
This performance comes as Bangladesh prepares for their first Test series on Australian soil in 23 years. The first Test is scheduled for August 13 in Darwin, followed by the second on August 22 in Mackay. Miraz believes this century provides a significant confidence boost ahead of the main series. He noted that the mindset he maintained during this innings would be beneficial for both his personal form and the team’s success. Having traveled to Australia carrying the disappointment of losing the captaincy, Miraz has passed his “pre-exam” with flying colors, setting the stage for the real challenge that begins on August 13.
