Former Indian national cricket team captain and current Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president Sourav Ganguly has reported receiving death threats directed at himself and his wife, Dona Ganguly. The threats were delivered via letters sent to the CAB office, causing significant concern among cricket fans and the sporting community. These communications explicitly threatened the lives of Ganguly, his wife, and other close relatives.
According to police and eyewitness reports, anonymous letters have been arriving at Ganguly’s residence and office for approximately six months. While these initial communications were largely dismissed, the tone of recent correspondence escalated, prompting serious alarm. In response to the direct threats against his family, Ganguly formally filed a written complaint at the Thakurpukur police station in South Kolkata on Monday.
The Press Trust of India (PTI) reports that law enforcement authorities have launched an immediate and high-priority investigation. Preliminary findings suggest the letters were delivered via courier services, with investigators tracing the potential origin of the sender to the Belgharia area in the North 24 Parganas district. Police are currently analyzing the courier receipts, the origin points of the letters, and mobile network data to identify the individuals responsible.
A senior official from the Kolkata Police stated, “We are treating this complaint with the utmost seriousness. Multiple police teams are actively working to uncover the identities of the senders and the motives behind these threats.” In the interim, authorities have taken steps to bolster security measures for Sourav Ganguly and his family to ensure their safety while the investigation remains ongoing.
