Arne Slot has officially addressed speculation regarding his future, confirming that his next managerial role will be in club football. The former Liverpool head coach, who has been without a club since his departure from Anfield at the end of May, clarified his position following recent reports that linked him to the vacant Netherlands national team head coach role.
The position became a point of interest following the departure of Ronald Koeman, who left the post after the Dutch side’s exit in the round of 32 at the World Cup against Morocco. Despite rumors suggesting that Slot had withdrawn from the process due to disagreements over salary and contract length, the manager has moved to set the record straight.
In an interview with Voetbal International, Slot dismissed the claims of a breakdown in negotiations. He stated, “Over the past few weeks, and particularly the past few days, various reports have appeared regarding the vacancy at the Dutch national team, suggesting that I had withdrawn from the process after lengthy negotiations, including regarding salary and contract duration. That speculation is incorrect. We simply never reached that stage of the talks.”
Slot emphasized that his decision was rooted in his desire for daily involvement on the training pitch, a dynamic he believes is distinct from the responsibilities of international management. “At this stage of my career, I prefer to see myself on the training pitch with my players every day. Something that is simply not possible in the same way with a national team,” he explained.
The manager noted that this preference led him to halt discussions before they reached the stage of drafting a contract. He expressed his appreciation for the KNVB, stating, “I have enormous respect for the national team and for the KNVB and can only be positive about the professional manner in which the talks proceeded that week.”
While Slot remains focused on club management, he did not rule out an international role in the distant future. “It would be a great honour to represent my country as national coach one day. However, this was not the right moment for me,” he added. He concluded by reiterating his belief that club football currently has more to offer his professional development.
Prior to these developments, Slot had been mentioned as a potential candidate for the Fulham managerial vacancy, though that position was eventually filled by Alvaro Arbeloa. As a free agent, Slot remains one of the most high-profile managers currently available on the market.
