Nineteen-year-old British cyclist Finlay Tarling has died following a fatal accident during the eighth stage of the Volta a Portugal. The Welsh rider was competing for the NSN Development Team on the 166.8km route between Melgaco and Fafe when the incident occurred.
In a formal statement, the NSN Development Team expressed their profound grief, stating, “We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Finlay Tarling at the Volta a Portugal today.” The team described him as a cherished member of their squad, a beloved son, brother, and friend, adding, “Our deepest condolences go out to Fin’s parents Michael and Dawn, his brother Josh, and everyone who was lucky enough to call Fin a friend.”
Race organizers and the Portuguese Cycling Federation issued a joint message on X, extending their “most heartfelt condolences” to Tarling’s family, teammates, and loved ones. Out of respect and mourning, officials halted the race and canceled the scheduled podium ceremony.
Portuguese President Antonio Jose Seguro remarked that the tragedy has “plunged the peloton, the tournament and the host nation into mourning.” The Volta a Portugal, which began in Lisbon on 5 August, is a 10-stage event originally scheduled to conclude in Porto on 16 August.
Tarling, who competed in both road and track cycling, was widely regarded as a rising talent following in the footsteps of his older brother, Netcompany-Ineos rider Josh Tarling. He had established himself as a promising time trial specialist, notably finishing third in the under-23 men’s individual time trial at the British Championships this past June.
His competitive experience included participating in the Tour of Britain nearly a year ago. The cycling community continues to mourn the loss of the young athlete as investigations into the circumstances of the accident proceed.
