Following a historic nine-wicket defeat on home soil, Australian captain Pat Cummins has declined to offer excuses for his team’s performance against Bangladesh. Reflecting on the four-day Darwin Test, Cummins admitted that his side was outplayed in every facet of the game—batting, bowling, and fielding—and conceded that the match was effectively lost on the opening day.
Speaking to broadcasters after the match, Cummins stated, “We probably lost the game on the first day. I believe our preparation was spot on, so there are no excuses. Bangladesh simply played their best cricket and were superior in every department, showing immense patience and discipline throughout.” Australia, having won the toss and elected to bat, struggled significantly against the bowling of Hasan Mahmud, who claimed six wickets to dismantle the hosts for a total of 198 runs.
The visitors capitalized on this momentum as Tanzid Hasan scored 101, Najmul Hossain Shanto added 84, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz contributed 65, propelling Bangladesh to a first-innings total of 426. This performance granted the tourists a substantial 228-run lead. Cummins identified the lack of batting longevity as a turning point, noting, “We needed to find a way to bat for longer periods, and unfortunately, we also failed to make an impact with the ball.”
In Australia’s second innings, Cameron Green provided a glimmer of hope with a resilient 104, but the team was eventually bowled out for 284 as Miraz took five wickets and Mahmud added three. This left Bangladesh with a modest target of 57 runs, which they chased down in just 14.2 overs. Praising Green’s effort, Cummins remarked, “Cameron showed exactly what a quality player he is, but we needed a couple more players to stay at the crease with him.”
Despite facing criticism for his decision to bat first, Cummins maintained that he had no regrets regarding his tactical choices. “I am not remorseful about the decision; I would likely make the same call again,” he asserted. Looking ahead, the captain expressed confidence in his team’s ability to recover, adding, “The match has only just concluded, and we will certainly reflect on this, but we remain optimistic about bouncing back in the future.”
