Kelsey Mitchell etched her name into WNBA history on Tuesday, matching the league record for consecutive games with at least 20 points. By hitting the 20-point mark for the 20th straight outing, Mitchell equaled the record previously set by Las Vegas star A’ja Wilson. Her performance was instrumental in the Indiana Fever’s 101-95 victory over the Toronto Tempo, marking the team’s fifth win in a row.
The game saw a dominant offensive display from the Fever, with Mitchell contributing 29 points before sitting out the entire fourth quarter. Caitlin Clark added 24 points and seven assists to the effort. Together, Clark and Mitchell have now scored 20 or more points in the same game 16 times this season, establishing a new WNBA record by surpassing the 15-game mark set by Diana Taurasi and Cappie Pondexter with Phoenix in 2008.
Despite her success, Mitchell’s night ended early when she headed to the locker room late in the third quarter after scoring eight points in less than a minute. Fever coach Stephanie White clarified post-game that the guard was not suffering from a serious injury, but rather appeared to get “overheated” due to the high temperatures in the arena.
Indiana’s depth was on full display, with Aliyah Boston adding 16 points and Sophie Cunningham contributing 13 off the bench. The Fever (24-12) started strong, shooting 61.9% in the first quarter to build a 33-23 lead. Although the Tempo managed to cut the deficit to six points midway through the second quarter, Indiana responded with an 11-0 run, heading into halftime with a 57-49 advantage after shooting 59% in the opening half.
The Toronto Tempo (10-24), who have now lost 11 consecutive games, struggled to keep pace, shooting 39.1% compared to Indiana’s 52.9%. Marina Mabrey led Toronto with 22 points, while Brittney Sykes returned from a foot injury to record 15 points. Reserve Aneesah Morrow provided a spark with 14 points and 16 rebounds, while Temi Fagbenle and Kiki Rice added 13 and 10 points, respectively.
The Fever maintained control early in the fourth quarter, extending their lead to 14 points following three free throws by Cunningham with 6:45 remaining. However, Indiana’s shooting accuracy dipped, allowing Toronto to narrow the gap to seven points with under three minutes left. A crucial steal by Makayla Timpson set up a Cunningham 3-pointer, pushing the lead back to 10 with 1:25 remaining.
Toronto made a final push when Mabrey hit back-to-back 3-pointers to bring the score to 97-93 with 59 seconds left. The Tempo had a chance to close the gap further after a Fever miss, but a palming violation by Mabrey and a subsequent foul by Rice effectively ended their comeback hopes.
