The upcoming white-ball cricket series between Bangladesh and India, originally slated for September, has become increasingly uncertain. With the scheduled dates approaching and no formal arrangements or itinerary in place, the likelihood of the tour proceeding as planned is now considered minimal. While neither the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) nor the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has issued an official statement confirming the cancellation, sources close to the developments suggest that both boards are actively exploring the possibility of rescheduling the three ODIs and three T20Is for January of next year.
A BCB director, speaking on the condition of anonymity, confirmed that the September window is effectively off the table. Discussions regarding a January slot have taken place, though nothing has been finalized. The feasibility of the series remains heavily dependent on the broader diplomatic climate and bilateral relations between the two nations. According to a BCCI source speaking to ANI, the Indian board is currently in talks with the Indian government regarding the potential shift to the beginning of next year, while the BCB is similarly scouting for an appropriate window to host the visitors.
The current impasse is exacerbated by recent political tensions. Following the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5, relations between Dhaka and New Delhi have been strained, particularly after reports emerged of Hasina and her associates holding virtual press conferences from Delhi. In response, Bangladesh’s Home Affairs Advisor Salahuddin Ahmad stated on August 8 that if India continues to provide a platform for the ousted leader to undermine Bangladesh’s democratic processes, friendly bilateral relations cannot be expected.
The history of this specific tour has been marked by several shifts. Originally, the Indian team was expected to visit Bangladesh on August 28. Furthermore, a tour originally planned for August 2025 was previously pushed to September 2026. Earlier this year, the BCB had indicated that India would play three ODIs and three T20Is across venues in Dhaka and Chittagong, but the BCCI has yet to provide formal confirmation. The last time India toured Bangladesh for a bilateral series was in December 2022, when the teams played two Tests and three ODIs.
Cricket relations have also been complicated by past friction, including the controversy surrounding Mustafizur Rahman. Earlier this year, the Kolkata Knight Riders reportedly dropped the Bangladeshi pacer from their IPL roster following pressure from certain groups, despite having acquired him at auction. This incident led to a decision by the BCB, then led by Aminul Islam, to not send the Bangladesh team to the T20 World Cup co-hosted by India. However, there are signs of a potential thaw; since taking charge, BCB President Tamim Iqbal has been working to improve communication between the two boards, including a visit to the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru earlier this month.
Despite the ongoing dialogue, BCB officials, including Tamim Iqbal, have previously noted the difficulty of providing definitive updates given the fluid nature of the situation. Should the series be successfully rescheduled for January, it would mark the first time in nearly four years that the Indian side has played on Bangladeshi soil. Both boards maintain that discussions will continue until a final decision is reached regarding the future of the tour.
