Chief selector Ajit Agarkar was notably absent from a high-level review meeting held in his hometown of Mumbai this past Thursday, sparking widespread speculation regarding his future with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Despite the rumors, the board has moved quickly to downplay the significance of his non-participation.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia explained that Agarkar’s absence was purely logistical. “Today, he was out of station, so he could not be a part of the meeting. The meeting was called at very short notice, and our chairman of the selection committee, Ajit, was not in town. He was in an area where he could not join online either, despite our best efforts,” Saikia stated. This explanation has faced some scrutiny, as Agarkar successfully conducted an online selection committee meeting just days prior to finalize the T20I squad for the upcoming three-match series against Afghanistan.
Addressing the rumors directly, Saikia emphasized that the meeting did not involve any discussions regarding the status of the selection committee or Agarkar’s position. “Today, we did not have any selection meeting. There was no such discussion in today’s meeting,” he asserted, adding, “I do not want to give any fodder to the speculators.”
Questions regarding Agarkar’s security in the role have persisted since the reported friction surrounding former captain Rohit Sharma, where selectors allegedly suggested retirement before the BCCI intervened. However, multiple sources indicate that no changes to the selection committee are planned. Agarkar is expected to serve out his current term, which concludes next July, with some unverified reports suggesting he could potentially receive an extension through the 2027 World Cup in October-November.
While Agarkar is currently believed to be overseas, he is expected to return for the Duleep Trophy final in Chennai, which begins on September 6. He is slated to attend that five-day red-ball match alongside several colleagues, while two other selectors are scheduled to oversee the T20I series against Afghanistan in Delhi. Although he was a constant presence during the recent Test series in Sri Lanka, his absence from Thursday’s proceedings left a void that the board is clearly eager to move past. The report also notes that although that could not be independently verified, he could even be given an extension until the World Cup in October-November 2027.
