Leeds United stormed to third place in the Premier League table following a dominant 4-1 victory over Newcastle United at Elland Road, handing Magpies manager Matthias Jaissle his first defeat in charge.
The commanding result puts Daniel Farke’s side directly behind defending champions Arsenal and Manchester City. Meanwhile, Newcastle drop to 12th position, remaining stuck on five points with a negative goal difference.
Newcastle’s difficult evening began inside the opening 20 minutes when Nico Gonzalez was forced off as a concussion substitute. His departure paired 18-year-old Sean Steur alongside 20-year-old Lewis Miley in central midfield, and the younger pair soon found themselves under heavy pressure.
The opening goal came when Ao Tanaka’s shot deflected twice before deflecting off Miley and looping into the net. Just two minutes later, Jayden Bogle doubled the lead after a Dominic Calvert-Lewin header from James Justin’s cross clipped the right-back on its way into the bottom corner.
Calvert-Lewin soon scored himself for a fifth consecutive league match at Elland Road, overpowering Sven Botman to slide his finish beneath Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek. Although Anton Stach missed a clear chance after intercepting a poor pass from Hornicek early in the second half, Noah Okafor extended the lead to 4-0 before the hour mark by volleying home from the edge of the box following a failed long-throw clearance.
Bazoumana Toure scored a late stoppage-time consolation goal for Newcastle, but the outcome had long been decided. Despite Newcastle’s summer rebuild following the departures of manager Eddie Howe, Anthony Gordon, Bruno Guimaraes, and Sandro Tonali, their young squad was ultimately outmuscled by a more experienced Leeds team.
Reflecting on the tough match, Jaissle acknowledged the setback. “It was clear from the start and I said that many times that we will have up and downs, challenges along the way,” Jaissle said. “We faced that challenge and it’s tough, it’s really tough.”
