Kent has officially earned its promotion to the first division of the County Championship after a two-year absence. The team secured its place in the top tier by defeating Gloucestershire by eight wickets in their final match of the season, a victory that capped off a remarkable turnaround from their struggles at the bottom of the second division last year.
Playing at Canterbury, the hosts exerted dominance early on. In the first innings, Gloucestershire was bundled out for 229, driven by Matt Milnes’ four wickets and Khaled Ahmed’s three. Kent responded strongly with a score of 353, anchored by a century from Ben Compton, which provided a commanding 124-run lead. Although Gloucestershire attempted a recovery in their second innings, they were restricted to 241 runs. Milnes claimed five wickets in this innings, while Khaled added two more to his match tally.
Needing 118 runs to win, Kent reached the target with eight wickets in hand, thanks to a 44-run contribution from Jack Crawley and an unbeaten 49 from Sam Northeast. Khaled proved instrumental during his stint, taking 16 wickets in just three matches this season. His compatriot Hasan Mahmud had previously made a significant impact, claiming 26 wickets across four games before returning home due to workload management.
Kent finished the season second in the second-division table with 211 points from 14 matches. Durham, finishing at the top with 250 points, also earned promotion. While Kent’s elevation to the first division was mathematically confirmed on Saturday following Northamptonshire’s loss to Middlesex, the team celebrated their promotion in style by winning their final fixture to end the campaign on a high note.
