Portugal clinched their place in the 2026-27 UEFA Nations League quarterfinals following a 2-1 victory over Norway in Porto on Sunday. Despite competing without Cristiano Ronaldo, the defending champions secured their spot in the final eight scheduled for March 2027 by ensuring a top-two finish in Group A4. This win marks their fourth consecutive victory in the group stage.
The match saw Norway take an unexpected lead in the 36th minute when Brentford defender Kristoffer Ajer struck a spectacular bending effort into the top corner from the edge of the penalty area. The lead was short-lived, however, as Barcelona defender Joao Cancelo equalized just two minutes later with a powerful 20-yard strike that mirrored the quality of the opener.
Jorge Jesus’s squad eventually surged ahead through AC Milan striker Goncalo Ramos, who started in place of the absent Ronaldo. Ramos connected with a setup from Joao Felix to score from close range. While Erling Haaland posed a threat for the visitors, firing a dangerous ball across the goal face around the hour mark, he was substituted for Jorgen Strand Larsen shortly thereafter as Norway failed to find a second goal.
The closing stages were complicated for the hosts after Francisco Conceicao received a red card for dissent. The player was shown two yellow cards in quick succession for his protests following an unsuccessful penalty appeal. Despite being reduced to ten men for the final minutes, Portugal successfully defended their lead to secure the result. Portugal played out the final minutes with 10 men after Francisco Conceicao was dismissed for two yellow cards in the space of a few seconds for dissent after he appealed for a penalty unsuccessfully.
Ronaldo’s absence from the squad follows his decision to leave the team camp last Wednesday. The all-time top scorer reportedly exited after learning he would not be included in the starting lineup for the previous match against Denmark.
