While Lionel Messi’s farewell match in Buenos Aires was marked by national celebration, the visiting Benin team has described the experience as deeply disappointing. Following their 3-0 defeat at the Monumental Stadium, the African side alleged that they were denied basic hospitality and courtesy throughout their stay.

Benin head coach Gernot Rohr revealed that his players were eager to interact with Messi and his teammates, hoping to exchange jerseys or take photographs. However, citing security concerns, organizers prohibited the Benin squad from accessing the corridors or dressing rooms used by the Argentine players. Consequently, despite being part of such a historic event, the visitors were unable to secure a single photo with the Argentine icon. Before the match, Benin had attempted to present gifts to Messi, but ultimately, the only souvenir Rohr could secure was a 2018-era Messi jersey, which he had signed by Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni.

Further allegations have surfaced from investigative journalist Romain Molina, who highlighted more severe issues regarding the treatment of the Beninese delegation. Molina claimed that the team received no financial bonus or share of the match revenue. His report further corroborates that the players were strictly barred from the corridor areas, preventing any contact with their hosts. These logistical frustrations extended beyond the pitch, as the visitors also expressed significant dissatisfaction with the hotel arrangements and transportation provided during their time in the Argentine capital.

While the night served as a grand homecoming and farewell for Argentina, for the guest team, the visit concluded with a lingering sense of resentment. The combination of restrictive access, perceived lack of professional courtesy, and administrative disputes has cast a shadow over what was intended to be a celebratory sporting spectacle.
