Marco Bezzecchi delivered a dominant performance at the sweltering Mandalika International Circuit on Sunday, storming to victory in the Indonesian Grand Prix. The Italian rider, competing on an Aprilia, overtook pole-sitter Raul Fernandez during the final third of the 27-lap race to claim his first win since May. This victory marks the 300th win for an Italian rider in MotoGP history and keeps Bezzecchi’s championship aspirations alive, placing him third in the standings with 309 points. Also on Aprilia bikes, spain’s Fernandez came home second and compatriot Martin third.
The race had a significant impact on the title fight as Jorge Martin, who finished third, reclaimed the overall championship lead. Martin now holds a slim two-point advantage, sitting at 355 points compared to the 353 points held by Ducati’s Marc Marquez, who finished sixth in the race. With five race weekends remaining, the title battle remains intense as the circuit shifts to Australia in two weeks. With Marquez looming in fifth without ever really threatening, former world champion Martin was running third.
For runner-up Raul Fernandez, the race was an exercise in resilience. Despite suffering from two fractured fingers sustained during Saturday’s sprint, the Spaniard managed to hold off pressure from Bezzecchi for much of the Grand Prix. Fernandez, who started from his first-ever pole position, eventually surrendered the lead on lap 19 but maintained a steady pace to cross the line 4.26 seconds behind the winner.
Reflecting on his victory, Bezzecchi expressed his satisfaction, stating, “It’s amazing, I’m very, very happy. It was a nice battle with Raul and I think me and all my team deserve a result like this. They have been through tough times with me.”
Jorge Martin, meanwhile, emphasized his focus on the long-term championship goal despite losing ground to his immediate competitors at various points during the weekend. “I did the maximum,” said Martin, who acknowledged losing several positions at the start before methodically climbing back through the field. “I did my best. I tried to be calm and was overtaking riders step by step. We are still in the fight and still in the lead.”
The weekend saw shifting momentum, as Marc Marquez had briefly claimed the championship lead after winning Saturday’s sprint race, a contest where both Bezzecchi and Fernandez crashed out. However, Sunday’s results ensured the top spot returned to Martin, setting the stage for a tight final stretch of the season.
