Yuvraj Singh has stepped into a new phase of his career, appointed as the assistant and batting coach for Delhi Capitals ahead of the 2027 Indian Premier League season. Tasked with helping the franchise secure its first-ever title, the former Indian all-rounder will reunite with his former captain, Sourav Ganguly, who has taken on the role of head coach. Yuvraj, who played for Delhi in the 2015 season following a 16-crore INR acquisition, emphasized that he is fully committed to the franchise’s success, stating he is ready to pour his heart and soul into the team’s ambitions. He kept us together, when he was captain and I made my debut. He made us believe that we could become a great team and win tournaments outside India. Whether it was helping me understand selection, mentoring me or showing me what it takes to become a good international cricketer, he has always been like a big brother to me.
Preparing for this transition over the last three to four years, Yuvraj views this as a significant shift from his previous work with players on an individual basis. Transitioning into an entire team environment marks a fresh experience for the 2007 T20 and 2011 ODI World Cup winner. He expressed genuine excitement about the prospect of collaborating with Ganguly once again, noting the deep respect he holds for his former mentor. Yuvraj recalled how Ganguly shaped his early career, teaching him the value of unity and the conviction required to compete and succeed in foreign conditions. The best thing I learnt from Dada was how to create a good team environment. Understanding his insights and sharing mine, i’m looking forward to working with him. A key member of India’s 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup-winning sides, Yuvraj believes self-belief will be central to his coaching philosophy. “At this level, everybody is skilled and brings something different to the table.
Reflecting on his coaching methodology, Yuvraj stressed the importance of fostering self-belief. He argued that at the highest level of professional cricket, technical skill is a given, but mental fortitude serves as the differentiator. Yuvraj intends to cultivate an environment where every squad member feels valued and empowered by the franchise’s trust. By focusing on rigorous practice, game awareness, and match-readiness, he aims to build a team that thrives under pressure and maintains its competitive spirit across all facets of play, including deep batting, quality bowling, and fielding. It means they believe in you, if a franchise has selected you and given you a position in the squad.
The Capitals, who have only reached the IPL final once in 2020, currently face the challenge of breaking their title drought. Yuvraj remains optimistic about the team’s potential, highlighting the presence of talents like KL Rahul, Tristan Stubbs, Sameer Rizvi, and Ashutosh Sharma. He believes that by refining the team’s balance and fostering a collective belief system, the franchise can overcome its past shortcomings. According to Yuvraj, the primary goal is qualification, followed by a determined push for the championship.
Throughout his decorated playing career, Yuvraj featured in 132 IPL matches, accumulating 2750 runs and claiming 36 wickets. Now, he looks to channel that extensive experience into a coaching capacity. He is particularly focused on helping the squad develop the resilience to perform in any situation, regardless of the opposition. His ultimate vision for Delhi Capitals involves building a unit that is not only skilled but consistently prepared to fight for victory, ultimately transforming the franchise’s trajectory in the tournament.
