French Football Ethics Board Demands Political Neutrality in Stadiums

The National Council for Football Ethics (CNE) has issued a formal call for supporters to maintain neutrality within stadiums, citing a rise in political demonstrations linked to ongoing student-led protests across France. While the ethics body acknowledged that young fans, many of whom are students themselves, may feel compelled to voice support for demonstrators during matches, it emphasized that sports must remain a space for shared celebration rather than political discourse.

The current social climate follows widespread allegations of police brutality during largely peaceful marches. Authorities have reported over 6,600 arrests nationwide as of last week—a notably high figure for French protest movements. Reports indicate that police tactics have resulted in severe, life-changing injuries, including a 14-year-old suffering a shattered jaw from a tear gas grenade and a 15-year-old losing a hand due to a stun grenade. Officers have made extensive use of tear gas and batons to disperse crowds.

Recent Ligue 1 matches have become focal points for this tension. During a match between Lens and Lyon, fans displayed a banner condemning what they described as “disproportionate and systematic police violence.” Similarly, during a contest between PSG and Le Mans, supporters unfurled a message stating: “Your militias repress; our youth resists.”

In its official response, the CNE cited established international regulations, including the Olympic Charter and FIFA statutes, which enshrine political neutrality in sport. The organization reminded fans that sporting venues are not intended to be forums for political, ideological, religious, or trade union displays. All forms of symbols, clothing, or messaging that signal such affiliations are strictly prohibited under these sporting laws.

Concluding its statement, the ethics council stressed that the objective is to keep stadiums free from becoming battlegrounds for political or union activism. “Sport should unite, not divide,” the council stated, calling on all supporters to recognize their role as an integral part of the football community by upholding these neutrality standards in all circumstances to preserve the collective enjoyment of the game.
