Manchester United’s struggles deepened on Wednesday following a 4-1 Champions League defeat against Como, a result that has placed manager Michael Carrick under significant pressure. The team, now winless in their last seven outings across all competitions, struggled to find intensity after falling behind in just the second minute. A late stoppage-time effort from Joshua Zirkzee served as the only consolation in an otherwise dismal evening.
Captain Bruno Fernandes voiced concerns regarding the team’s tactical approach, specifically questioning the decision-making of the coaching staff. Speaking to TNT Sports, Fernandes noted that the team failed to apply sufficient pressure on the ball and lacked effective off-the-ball movement. He explained that the staff opted against a man-to-man pressing system, preferring to sit back and wait for the opposition, which he suggested allowed Como to grow in confidence throughout the match. “We started on the wrong foot, and they scored very early,” Fernandes told TNT Sports. “There was not enough pressure on the ball and not many good movements off the ball. There were many things not going our way. “Sometimes you have to be more brave under pressure, take the risk of pressing high and making them uncomfortable.”.
When asked if his comments served as a critique of Carrick’s management, the midfielder maintained that such evaluations are the responsibility of the coaching staff.
However, he emphasized that the squad needs to demonstrate greater bravery when facing pressure by taking the risk to press higher up the pitch and disrupt their opponents. Fernandes further highlighted a psychological issue, stating that the early goal caused the squad to fall into a “mood of defeat” that hampered their ability to compete.
Michael Carrick, 45, acknowledged the gravity of the situation and admitted that the performance was unacceptable. Accepting full responsibility for the team’s showing, he expressed his frustration as both a manager and a supporter of the club, noting that the intensity and purpose required for top-level football were missing. He offered an apology for the display, describing the result as more than disappointing. We didn’t bring that today,” he said. “I’ve got to apologise for the performance.”.
United currently sit with three points from their opening three Champions League fixtures. The club will be looking for a response in their next European outing when they host AS Roma at Old Trafford.
