Real Madrid maintained their flawless start to the Champions League campaign, securing a 4-1 victory over RB Leipzig on Wednesday. The win marks three consecutive victories in Europe for Jose Mourinho’s side, providing a critical morale boost ahead of the upcoming La Liga Clasico against rivals Barcelona.
Despite a challenging start to their domestic season, Madrid dominated the visiting German side. Bernardo Silva opened the scoring late in the first half, prodding home from close range after a Federico Valverde cross was spilled by goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt. It was the former Manchester City midfielder’s first goal for his new club. With Arda Guler doubling the advantage of the record 15-time European champions soon after the interval, bernardo Silva opened the scoring for Madrid from close range late in a tight first half. Vinicius, who improved on a poor showing at Roma last week without breaking out of his rut, drew a full-stretch save from Leipzig’s Maarten Vandevoordt.
Arda Guler doubled the lead shortly after the break in the 52nd minute. Jude Bellingham initiated the play with a cross to the back post, which Kylian Mbappe directed across the goal for Guler to finish under pressure. Madrid’s dominance continued as Mbappe later bent a clinical shot into the net after receiving a precise ball from Yan Diomande.
RB Leipzig found a brief consolation goal when Dean Huijsen lapsed defensively, allowing Tidiam Gomis to fire past Thibaut Courtois. However, Diomande, the club’s 140 million-euro ($157m) record signing, punctuated the victory with a powerful volley into the top corner from a Brahim Diaz cross, marking his third goal in four matches.
The match saw tactical adjustments from Mourinho, who deployed Valverde at right-back for the second consecutive game and utilized Bernardo Silva and Eduardo Camavinga in midfield.
Vinicius Jr, who is currently serving a four-match domestic suspension, started on the left flank but was substituted for Diomande with 20 minutes remaining.
The Brazilian showed clear frustration, knowing he faces a layoff until November 4, when Madrid travels to face AEK Athens.
Leipzig had initially pressured the Madrid defense, with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois forced into a low, vital save early on to deny Romulo Cardoso.
Later, Vandevoordt made an impressive effort to stop a fierce Valverde strike before the Madrid breakthrough. Despite Madrid’s European success, the team remains without a major trophy over the last two seasons and will look to carry this momentum into their high-stakes domestic clash this Sunday.
