Brazilian forward Estevao has endured a challenging season, managing only two starts across all competitions for Chelsea. This marks a stark contrast to his rapid ascent last October, when he made headlines by scoring a dramatic winner against the Premier League champions in the final moments of the match. And Estevao is beginning to attract attention for all the wrong reasons as he struggles to force his way into Xabi Alonso’s side, fast forward 12 months.
Twelve months later, the 19-year-old, who arrived from Palmeiras last summer, is struggling to justify his place in manager Xabi Alonso’s plans. His absence was particularly notable during Wednesday’s Carabao Cup clash at Anfield, where Chelsea suffered a penalty shootout defeat to Liverpool. Despite taking an early lead through Morgan Rogers, Chelsea failed to maintain momentum after Cody Gakpo equalized for the hosts.
The teenager’s status within the squad became clear midway through the second half. As both teams sought a decisive goal, Alonso turned to his bench, making a triple substitution in an attempt to shift the game in his side’s favor. Among those introduced was Emanuel Emegha, who was making his first appearance for the club since arriving from Strasbourg over the summer.
The tactical decision to use five substitutions in total without calling upon Estevao highlighted his current standing.
Shortly after the final change was made, the young forward was observed ending his warm-up routine and returning to the bench, confirming another match without any playing time. With competition for attacking roles intensifying, Estevao faces significant pressure to prove he can regain the form that initially saw him become a fan favorite at Stamford Bridge.
