Qualifying Highlights

  • Pole position: Lewis Hamilton secured his first pole since the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix and the 105th of his career.
  • Grid position: Kimi Antonelli qualified in fourth place for the Mercedes team.
  • Title scenario: The 20-year-old Italian driver remains in a strong position to seal the championship.
  • Front row: Hamilton edged out former Mercedes team-mate George Russell by 0.009 seconds.

Lewis Hamilton overshadowed the weekend as veteran driver Kimi Antonelli bids to become Formula 1’s youngest world champion. Fourth place on the grid is a low-key result for the young Mercedes driver relative to his overall season and the milestone he is about to achieve.

Fittingly, the only two drivers who can mathematically prevent Antonelli from sealing the title on Sunday line up together on the front row. Antonelli will secure the championship unless either Hamilton or Russell wins the race. Even in that scenario, he needs only a ninth-place finish if Russell wins, or tenth if Hamilton takes victory.

Hamilton noted that the championship scenario was not occupying his focus ahead of the race. “That’s not really something we’re thinking of,” he stated. “We’re thinking of just trying to score the best result for the team.”

Hamilton praised his successor’s recent performances, adding: “Kimi, he’s continued to drive really well and doing what he needs to do.

All he has to do is just finish where he is, and he’s kind of on his own journey. Our journey is to focus on performing the best we can this weekend and holding on to second in the Constructors’ Championship.”
