Huge Loss If IPL Cancelled

Under the mediation of U.S. President Donald Trump, India and Pakistan have agreed to a ceasefire. However, whether these two arch-rivals will stick to their commitments remains to be seen. Meanwhile, the ongoing conflict between the two nations has already led to major financial losses for both countries’ cricket boards.

While the exact financial impact of the postponed Pakistan Super League (PSL) is yet to be determined, the Indian Premier League (IPL) could face losses of nearly ₹2,000 crore (INR) if the remainder of the tournament is not played.

Several Indian media outlets reported this yesterday. Sixteen IPL matches are still left in the season. If they are not held, even after factoring in insurance payouts, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) estimates a loss of ₹100–₹125 crore per match. Not only the BCCI but also broadcasters, sponsors, and franchises stand to suffer significant financial hits.

To avoid this massive loss, the BCCI is exploring ways to complete the IPL. For now, the tournament has been suspended for a week. According to a report by cricket website ESPNcricinfo, the organizers are awaiting permission from the Indian government to resume the tournament. If approved, the remaining matches may be hosted in just three cities—Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad—to limit travel and logistics.

According to British media outlet The Guardian, as reported by NDTV, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has offered to host the remaining matches of the IPL. ECB CEO Richard Gould reportedly made the proposal. If India fails to resume the IPL within a week, England has expressed interest in hosting the remainder of the tournament later this year.
