Shubman is India’s new Test captain

by Sports Desk

The speculation has finally turned into reality. Young batter Shubman Gill has officially been appointed the new captain of India’s Test team, replacing Rohit Sharma. At the same time, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the squad for the upcoming England Test tour.

This marks India’s first Test series since both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their retirements from red-ball cricket.

As openers, Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul have been included, with Abhimanyu Easwaran and Sai Sudharsan also selected—giving Rahul the option to slot into the middle order if needed. Gill, the new captain, is expected to bat at number three. Karun Nair returns to the squad after strong performances in domestic cricket. Rishabh Pant is the primary wicketkeeper, while Dhruv Jurel has been named as the backup.

The middle order will be bolstered by the presence of Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, and Ravindra Jadeja. As expected, Jasprit Bumrah will lead the pace attack, though concerns remain over his availability for all five matches due to fitness. He will be supported by Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, and Arshdeep Singh. Kuldeep Yadav is the lone specialist spinner in the squad.

Test Schedule in England:
1st Test: June 20 – Leeds

2nd Test: July 2 – Manchester

3rd Test: July 10 – Lord’s

4th Test: July 23 – Manchester

5th Test: July 31 – The Oval, London

Before the main series begins, India will play two unofficial Tests against England Lions and conduct intra-squad matches to prepare.
