Ahmad Al Janahi Makes History as First Emirati to Finish Grueling 174km UTMB Race

Ahmad Al Janahi has etched his name into the history books, becoming the first Emirati athlete to successfully complete the prestigious 174-kilometre UTMB World Series Finals. The endurance event, which took place in Chamonix, France, between August 24 and August 30, challenged runners with a demanding loop featuring over 9,700 metres of elevation gain across the borders of France, Italy, and Switzerland.

The journey was far from straightforward. A thunderstorm forced a two-hour delay to the start, setting an ominous tone for the grueling trek. Al Janahi, who had dedicated two years of intensive preparation to this specific challenge, faced his most significant hurdle around the 16-hour mark. While navigating the climb from Italy toward Switzerland, he battled intense fatigue, severe stomach pain, and the effects of prolonged sleep deprivation, leaving his ability to finish in doubt.

Seeking guidance, he reached out to his coach, Ole Brom, who advised him to break the remaining distance into manageable segments. By focusing on reaching the next checkpoint and refueling, Al Janahi managed to regain his momentum. His training, which included overnight mountain sessions in Ras Al Khaimah, proved vital in helping him endure the long periods of darkness and physical strain that defined the race.

As he neared the conclusion of his 37-hour and 50-minute effort, he was joined for the final stretch by Sheikh Omar Bin Saqr Al Qasimi. In a poignant finish, Al Janahi carried the UAE flag for the last 200 metres, crossing the line after nearly 38 hours of continuous movement without sleep.

This achievement adds to a growing list of endurance feats for the Emirati runner. Previously, he completed a 620-kilometre run across the UAE, traversing the distance from the Saudi border to Fujairah in 6 days, 21 hours, and 47 minutes. He also successfully navigated a 114-kilometre trail run through the Hajar Mountains in 2024, finishing in just over 23 hours.

For Al Janahi, the UTMB World Series Finals represented the latest chapter in a career defined by pushing past conventional limits. Through the pain, darkness, and uncertainty of the Alpine terrain, his singular goal remained constant: to keep moving forward until the finish line was reached.

The successful completion of the course marks a significant milestone for UAE endurance sports. By navigating the steep climbs and volatile conditions of the Mont Blanc region, Al Janahi has demonstrated the level of determination required to compete on one of the world’s most difficult ultra-running stages. The report also notes that he knew the challenge ahead would demand more than physical strength, when Ahmad Al Janahi arrived in Chamonix. The report also notes that finishing the race appeared uncertain, at that stage. The report also notes that once there, he ate and reassessed his condition before continuing. The report also notes that one section at a time, despite the physical strain, that decision allowed him to move forward. The report also notes that that preparation became especially important as the hours accumulated in Chamonix.
