Bangladesh has been eliminated from the FIFA ASEAN Cup following a 1-0 loss to Singapore in their second group stage match. The game took place today at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta. This defeat comes after Bangladesh’s initial 3-0 loss to Malaysia, confirming their exit from the tournament with one match still to play. Their third and final group stage fixture is scheduled for October 1 against host nation Indonesia.
Bangladesh started strongly against Singapore, dominating the first 15 minutes of play. However, Singapore began to assert their skill, eventually breaking Bangladesh’s defense in the 35th minute. Singapore’s Stuart scored with a header from a left-wing cross, leaving Bangladesh goalkeeper Srabon with no chance, despite an earlier impressive save. Singapore had another opportunity to extend their lead two minutes later, which could have made the score 2-0 if the ball hadn’t rebounded off the post. Bangladesh struggled to create scoring chances in the first half.
After the break, Bangladesh attempted to re-enter the match, increasing their pace. In the 64th minute, Shamit’s header went over Singapore’s crossbar. Despite creating additional opportunities, Bangladesh failed to score. Coach Thomas Dooley made four changes to the Bangladesh squad for the Singapore match, with captain Jamal Bhuiyan, Sheikh Morsalin, Zayan Ahmed, and Yusuf Zidan all returning to the starting lineup.
