The Bangladesh High-Performance (HP) team’s journey in the Australian Top End T20 tournament concluded in the semifinals after a narrow one-wicket defeat to Victoria Cricket Academy. Despite entering the knockout stage with high hopes of clinching the title, the team was undone by a significant batting failure, leaving them unable to defend a modest total.
Batting first at Darwin’s Garden Oval, Bangladesh struggled to build momentum. Captain Irfan Sukkur endured a difficult tournament, marking his fourth single-digit score in six matches by falling for a duck in the semifinal. While the team started reasonably well, reaching 26 runs in 2.4 overs, opener Habibur Rahman Sohan was dismissed shortly after for just 3 runs. Jishan Alam provided some stability with 30 runs, and Ariful Islam contributed 19, but the middle and lower order failed to form lasting partnerships. Abdul Ghaffar Saqlain added 10 runs off 16 balls, and Abu Hider Rony chipped in with 12 off 18, but key players like Sabbir Rahman and Shamim Hossain Patwari could not deliver. Consequently, the side was bundled out for 101 in just 17.1 overs, with Victoria’s Will Sutherland claiming four wickets.
Defending a target of 102, the Bangladesh bowlers fought valiantly to keep the game alive. Victoria suffered an early setback, losing their first wicket with only one run on the board, and continued to lose wickets at regular intervals. Mohammad Rubel’s spin proved particularly effective, as he claimed three wickets to tilt the momentum in Bangladesh’s favor, while Shamim Patwari added two more. Despite the pressure, Victoria’s Campbell Kellaway anchored the chase with a team-high 23 runs.
The match remained tightly contested until the final moments, but Victoria ultimately secured the victory with two balls to spare. This exit marks a disappointing end for the HP squad, which had finished as runners-up in the inaugural 2024 edition and was looking to improve upon their ninth-place finish in the subsequent tournament.
