Bangladesh’s U-17 women’s football team launched their AFC U-17 Women’s Asian Cup qualifying campaign with a dramatic 2-1 victory over hosts Uzbekistan on Thursday. The match appeared to be heading toward a 1-1 draw until Runa Akter struck during stoppage time in the second half, securing three crucial points for her side in Group H.
The action at the Tashkent stadium began early, with Bangladesh taking a lead just three minutes into the game. Fatema Akter launched a counter-attack from the left side of the midfield, delivering a precise long pass to Purnima on the right. Purnima controlled the ball expertly and slotted it past Uzbek goalkeeper Maria to put her team ahead. However, the lead was neutralized in the 17th minute following a defensive lapse. Bangladesh’s Irene Khatun lost possession near the goal, allowing Uzbekistan defender Farangiz to capitalize and equalize.
Despite sustained pressure and several scoring opportunities for both teams throughout the remainder of the contest, the deadlock persisted until Runa Akter’s late heroics. This victory serves as a vital first step for the Bangladeshi squad, who now turn their focus to their final group match against the Philippines on October 11. The Philippines have already demonstrated their strength by defeating Uzbekistan 4-0. The Bangladesh U-17 women’s team must secure the top spot in the group to advance to the tournament’s main stage.
