Bangladesh have advanced to the semifinals of the SAFF U-19 Championship. This afternoon, at the Golden Jubilee Stadium in Yupia, Arunachal, India, Bangladesh secured a 3-0 win over Bhutan in their second and final Group A match, confirming a place in the last four of the tournament.
Bangladesh had drawn 2-2 against the Maldives in their opening group match last Friday. To qualify for the semifinals, they needed a win today. A draw or loss would have meant they’d have to wait for the outcome of the Bhutan vs Maldives match on Tuesday, May 13.
If the match between Bhutan and the Maldives ends in a draw, Bangladesh will top the group. If the Maldives beat Bhutan, both Bangladesh and the Maldives will be level on four points, and the group winner will then be decided based on goal difference. From the other group, Nepal and India are in contention for the semifinals.
Just like the first match, Bangladesh took a 2-0 lead in the first half . The opening goal came in the 13th minute when captain Nazmul Huda Faisal sent a pass to Murshed Ali, who skillfully controlled the ball, entered the box, and scored with a powerful shot.
