The Bangladesh women’s cricket team is determined to rewrite their narrative at the 2026 T20 Asia Cup, shifting their focus beyond the semi-final stage to reach the tournament final. Captain Nigar Sultana Jyoti expressed confidence in her squad’s ability to achieve this milestone, aiming to provide the nation with a significant reason to celebrate. The tournament, which commences today in Dubai, is scheduled to run from August 28 through September 13.
This year’s edition features eight teams competing in a total of 15 matches, all hosted in Dubai. The format consists of 12 group-stage matches followed by two semi-finals and the final. Bangladesh has been placed in Group B alongside defending champions Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates, and Indonesia. Group A comprises India, Pakistan, Hong Kong, and Thailand, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the knockout stage.
India remains a formidable favorite, having won the T20 Asia Cup three times and finishing as runners-up twice. However, Sri Lanka enters the competition as the team to beat after defeating India to claim the 2024 title. Sri Lanka has demonstrated strong form this year, securing 10 wins in 13 matches, including series victories against the West Indies (2-1), Bangladesh (3-0), and Pakistan (2-1). Historically, Sri Lanka has dominated their T20 encounters with Bangladesh, winning 13 out of 16 meetings. The two sides are set to face each other in the group stage on September 6.
Despite the challenging statistics, Captain Jyoti is prioritizing her team’s preparation over past records. To acclimate to the conditions in Dubai, the squad conducted training sessions and matches under floodlights in Bangladesh. Having previously competed in a T20 World Cup in Dubai, the players are familiar with the environment. Jyoti remains optimistic that if the team executes their plans effectively, they can surpass the semi-final hurdle. Bangladesh begins their campaign on August 31 with an opening match against Indonesia.
