Bangladesh women’s cricket team captain Nigar Sultana Jyoti is facing a wave of scrutiny regarding her leadership and team management. Recent allegations against her include the abuse of power, harassment of teammates, and controversial influence over team selection. Her decision-making during the latest Asia Cup has further fueled this criticism, specifically regarding her failure to participate in the traditional post-toss handshake with opposing Indian captains.
While handshakes between opposing captains are a long-standing tradition in cricket, the practice has faced disruption in recent years due to geopolitical tensions. Addressing the controversy, BCB Women’s Wing Chairman Rafiqul Islam Babu confirmed on Saturday that the decision to forgo the handshake was entirely Jyoti’s. Babu emphasized that the board expects sporting relations to remain cordial, noting that even nations with complex diplomatic histories continue to engage in sports. He clarified that the board was not consulted, characterizing the action as a personal choice rather than an official directive.
Beyond the handshake incident, the internal environment of the national women’s squad has become a point of concern. Reports have emerged detailing a toxic dressing room atmosphere, internal conflicts, and the formation of cliques among players, with several allegations directly implicating the current captain. According to Babu, the board has already held discussions regarding these complaints, including consultations with the board president. He assured that the allegations will be thoroughly investigated to determine necessary remedial actions.
Despite calls from various quarters within the cricket community to remove Jyoti from her role following the conclusion of the Asia Cup, the board is opting for patience. Chairman Babu stated that the team is currently transitioning directly into the Asian Games, with squad and leadership selections having been finalized nearly two months ago. Consequently, no immediate changes to the captaincy will occur. The board expects the team to address their past errors and focus on performance for the upcoming tournaments. Post-competition reviews will determine the future direction of the leadership ahead of subsequent tours, including scheduled series in Australia and New Zealand.
