The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has officially decided not to host the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) this year. Following significant financial losses over the past two seasons, the board has opted to prioritize comprehensive reforms and strategic planning rather than rushing into another tournament.
Financial Sustainability and Restructuring
BCB President Tamim Iqbal confirmed the decision on Thursday, stating, “The BPL is not happening this year. We are working on a new formula.” According to board records, the BPL incurred approximately 400 million BDT in losses over the last two years. Tamim emphasized that franchise-based cricket should generate revenue for the board, not consistent deficits, noting that continuing the tournament under current conditions is not viable until these issues are resolved.
Future Outlook and Franchise Planning
Despite the cancellation, the BCB president clarified that the league is not being permanently discontinued. Tamim stated, “We have a 100% intention to do this, but I do not want to rush. I want to do everything correctly, even if it takes six or 12 months.” The board has already initiated contact with franchises to address outstanding dues, bank guarantees, and other operational complexities, aiming to finalize the franchise process by April or May of next year.
Commitment to Quality
- Tamim Iqbal stressed that his priority is maintaining the integrity of the tournament rather than quantity.
- The board president remarked, “I could stand up five teams by tomorrow if I wanted to, but I will not do that.”
- The ultimate goal remains ensuring high-quality cricket while upholding the prestige of the Bangladesh Cricket Board.
