Bischof and Wirtz Secure First Germany Win Under Klopp

Jürgen Klopp claimed his first victory as Germany manager on Thursday, as his side secured a deserved 2-0 win over Serbia in the UEFA Nations League at Munich’s Allianz Arena. The result marks a positive shift for the team, which had previously managed only a 1-1 draw against the Netherlands and a 0-1 defeat to Serbia. Under-fire Germany star shines v Serbia.

Klopp made wholesale changes to the lineup that fell to Greece, handing senior debuts to Jonas Urbig and Derry Scherhant. In the absence of Joshua Kimmich, who departed the squad following the first two matches, Serge Gnabry stepped in as captain.

Germany started with high intensity, controlling the game immediately. Although Aleksandar Pavlovic, Nick Woltemade, and Waldemar Anton missed early attempts, the pressure remained constant. Serge Gnabry squandered a golden opportunity in the 29th minute after combining with Woltemade, but his shot was denied by Serbian goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic. With Aleksandar Pavlovic, Nick Woltemade and Waldemar Anton all putting shots wide in the opening stages, jürgen Klopp’s side began the game on the front foot and dominated right away. The Bayern Munich attacker tried to score himself but couldn’t get the ball past Djordje Petrovic in the Serbian goal, rather than passing the ball back to the forward.

Serbia briefly threatened through a dangerous counter-attack involving Filip Kostic and Luka Jovic, but the German defense held firm. At the other end, Petrovic produced a fine save to stop a header from Florian Wirtz. The breakthrough finally arrived in the 39th minute; after Wirtz hit the post, Tom Bischof was perfectly positioned to convert the rebound on his first-ever start for the national team. But almost scored out of nowhere on the counter a few minutes later, serbia rarely threatened Germany in the first half. Wirtz took a few nice touches in the box before dinking a shot onto the post.

The second half saw Said El Mala enter for his debut, replacing Gnabry. While Nick Woltemade missed a close-range effort around the hour mark, Germany soon extended their lead. Maximilian Mittelstädt set up Wirtz, who—now wearing the captain’s armband—maneuvered past Srdjan Babic to fire into the bottom corner.

Despite a late header from Malick Thiaw, Wirtz’s strike stood as the final goal of the evening. Germany successfully maintained their lead to seal the 2-0 result. The match concludes a period of testing for the squad, with the upcoming schedule indicating a busy run for various regional and club fixtures.
