Borussia Dortmund is incentivizing supporters to stow their devices during matches by introducing a new reward scheme. Fans who opt into a specific “fan mode” feature within the club’s official app can earn points for minimizing phone usage while inside the stadium. These points can be redeemed for club merchandise, including signed jerseys and various gift cards. The system tracks how frequently a device is unlocked throughout the match, excluding halftime, with points deducted for each interaction. Not counting the halftime break, and award points to people based on how little they use the device, with prizes on offer for those with the most points, fan mode will measure how often the phone is unlocked during the game.
The initiative, which launches this Saturday during the club’s home match against Eintracht Frankfurt, is strictly voluntary and does not constitute a ban on mobile devices. Dortmund CEO Carsten Cramer emphasized the importance of the live experience, noting that the shared energy of more than 81,000 spectators singing and cheering is truly irreplaceable. The move comes as German football clubs increasingly respond to complaints that the rise of social media streaming and influencer-style content creation is detracting from the traditional stadium atmosphere, particularly within the iconic “Yellow Wall” standing sections. According to “Over 81,000 people in the stadium, singing, cheering, and holding their breath together: this here and now is irreplaceable,” Dortmund CEO Carsten Cramer, In a statement late on Thursday.
This effort aligns with a broader trend across German football regarding the regulation of recording devices.
Earlier this month, second-division side Hertha Berlin announced a prohibition on commercially produced or monetized video content within its grounds, though personal photography remains permitted. Similarly, Dynamo Dresden implemented a ban in August targeting commercial filming for social media, citing the need to protect the club’s television rights and ensure a comfortable environment for all spectators. By encouraging fans to engage directly with the game, Dortmund aims to preserve the authentic, vocal spirit for which the club is globally recognized.
