Australia have been dealt a major setback in their white-ball campaign as fast bowler Owen has been ruled out of the remainder of the series following a fierce blow from South Africa’s pace spearhead Kagiso Rabada.
The incident occurred during the second ODI when Owen was struck on the forearm by a rapid short delivery from Rabada, forcing him to retire hurt. Scans later revealed a hairline fracture, ending his participation in the series.
Australia’s medical team confirmed the 25-year-old will undergo a two-week recovery program before reassessing his fitness ahead of the upcoming T20I series against New Zealand.
Owen’s absence is a major headache for skipper Pat Cummins, with Australia already missing several first-choice bowlers due to rotation and injury. The selectors are expected to call up a replacement from the Australia A squad touring the subcontinent.
South Africa lead the white-ball series 2-0, and the hosts will now have to regroup without one of their key seam options.
