Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes maintains a deep appreciation for the guidance of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, his first head coach after arriving at the club. The Portuguese playmaker moved to the Premier League giants from Sporting CP in January 2020 and quickly established himself as a central figure under the Norwegian tactician. Nevertheless, his very first United manager still holds a special place in his heart. Before beating Norway in Bruno’s absence, the Selecao began the UEFA Nations League with a slim win over Wales. On Sunday, Portugal will end the window by hosting Norway in the return fixture. We haven’t spoken about this clash [against Norway]. We speak once in a while about football but we haven’t had the chance to speak about this game.
Reflecting on his career path, Fernandes noted that Solskjaer played a pivotal role in his development by providing him with the opportunity to perform on a global stage. The midfielder remains grateful for the support he received while adjusting to life at Carrington, acknowledging the manager’s influence during his initial years at Old Trafford. Who brought him to the club and helped him settle at Carrington, the playmaker remains grateful for Man Utd’s 1999 hero.
Speaking via Beanyman Sports, Fernandes stated, “Ole was a very important manager for me. He was the one who gave me a chance to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world.” He added that he remains happy with the period he spent under Solskjaer’s leadership, even as their focus shifts toward their respective future engagements.
Since Solskjaer’s departure in December 2021, Fernandes has solidified his status as a cornerstone of the Manchester United lineup. Despite working under several subsequent managers—including Ralf Rangnick, Erik ten Hag, Ruben Amorim, and Michael Carrick—the Portuguese star has remained a consistent presence on the pitch. Last season, he achieved a career milestone by earning the Premier League Player of the Year award, setting a new record with 21 assists in a single campaign.
Currently, the 32-year-old is focused on international duty with Portugal. Despite the controversy surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit from the squad, Portugal has navigated the break effectively. Fernandes recently overcame physical concerns to feature against Denmark, providing two assists in a 4-2 victory. Fernandes has been away on international duty over the past couple of weeks. The United skipper overcame a slight physical issue as he returned for the Copenhagen showdown against Denmark and produced two assists that helped his nation prevail 4-2.
