South African batter Heinrich Klaasen has announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket, marking the end of a dynamic career that leaves a significant gap in the national setup ahead of the 2027 World Cup, which South Africa will co-host.

Klaasen, 33, has been a key figure in South Africa’s white-ball squads and one of the most destructive batters in limited-overs cricket. While stepping away from the international stage, he is expected to continue playing in T20 franchise leagues around the world.

“It’s a sad day for me as I announce my retirement from international cricket,” Klaasen said in a statement released by Cricket South Africa on Monday. “It was a very tough decision, but one I’ve made with peace. I look forward to spending more time with my family.”

Klaasen departs with impressive credentials: he averaged 43.69 in 60 ODIs, scoring four centuries and 11 fifties, and amassed exactly 1,000 runs in 58 T20Is at a strike rate of 141.84. He also featured in four Test matches.

South Africa’s Director of National Teams and High Performance, Enoch Nkwe, acknowledged Klaasen’s contribution and the difficulty of his decision.

“Heinrich has been open and honest with us in recent months. While we’re sad to see him go, we fully support his choice and wish him success in the next phase of his career,” Nkwe said.

Klaasen’s retirement marks the end of a powerful presence in the Proteas lineup and a fan favorite known for his aggressive style and match-winning ability.
