Mitchell Marsh will return to lead Australia in next month’s Twenty20 series against the West Indies, while Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Travis Head have been rested from the 16-player squad, Cricket Australia announced on Wednesday.
Marsh, who missed Australia’s last T20 series against Pakistan in November, hands back the captaincy role from Josh Inglis, who led the side in his absence.
Exciting young batter Mitchell Owen, 23, has received his maiden international call-up following a standout Big Bash League season with the Hobart Hurricanes. He helped guide them to their first BBL title and smashed the joint-fastest century in the tournament’s final.
Glenn Maxwell, who recently retired from one-day internationals to concentrate on the 2026 T20 World Cup, has also been included. However, there was no room in the squad for batter Jake Fraser-McGurk or all-rounder Marcus Stoinis.
“We’ve got a packed T20 calendar ahead, and this series is another opportunity to continue shaping a squad we believe can succeed at the World Cup in the subcontinent,” said selection chair George Bailey.
“There are still chances for players outside this group to make their case — especially during the Indian series and the upcoming Big Bash. The squad is developing well in terms of roles, connections, and combinations.”
Australia will play five T20 internationals against the West Indies, starting July 21 in Kingston.
