Gavaskar Urges Restraint In IPL

by Sports Desk

The dark clouds over the Indian Premier League (IPL) have cleared and sunshine has returned. Following the suspension of the tournament due to the war-like situation along the India-Pakistan border, the franchise cricket league is set to resume. With a ceasefire now in effect, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced that IPL matches will resume on May 17, along with a revised schedule for the remaining fixtures.

However, former Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has suggested that the IPL restart should take place in a different atmosphere. He has called for a more restrained approach, asking for the removal of cheerleaders, DJ music, and celebratory fanfare out of respect for recent tragedies.

“I sincerely hope the remaining matches of the tournament are conducted with some restraint,” Gavaskar said. “Tragic incidents have occurred, and some families have lost their loved ones. There should be no music or shouting DJs during innings. Cricket is not just a sport—it’s a deep emotional connection for millions. In a time of grief, we must be sensitive in how we express that emotion.”

The cricket icon added, “Let’s drop the dancing and the music in the IPL. Let the games be played, let the fans come and enjoy the cricket. But let the rest of the tournament be about just the game—no dance troupes, no extra entertainment. That would be a respectful tribute to the families affected.”

The remainder of the IPL will resume on May 17. Interestingly, the Pakistan Super League (PSL) is also scheduled to restart on the same day.
