Brazil and Ecuador Secure World Cup spots, While Uruguay Faces a Tough Battle to Qualify

by Sports Desk

Brazil booked their place at the 2026 World Cup with a narrow 1-0 home win over Paraguay on June 10, marking Carlo Ancelotti’s first victory as head coach. Vinicius Jr. scored the lone goal just before halftime, tapping in a cross from new Manchester United signing Matheus Cunha.

The result, combined with Uruguay’s 2-0 win over Venezuela, confirmed Brazil’s qualification and left Paraguay needing just one more point to secure their first World Cup appearance since 2010.

Ecuador also clinched their spot with a goalless draw against Peru in Lima, while Uruguay moved to the brink of qualification thanks to goals from Rodrigo Aguirre and Giorgian de Arrascaeta. Uruguay now needs just one point from their final two matches.

Meanwhile, Venezuela’s hopes took a hit as they remain seventh, the intercontinental playoff spot, with 18 points. Colombia missed a chance to secure vital points after a 1-1 draw with already-qualified Argentina, who fought back despite being reduced to 10 men.

Bolivia ended Chile’s qualification hopes with a 2-0 win, marking the third consecutive World Cup the former champions will miss.
