Spain’s Jenni Hermoso Left out of Women’s Euro 2025 Qualifiers Squad

Jenni Hermoso, Spain’s all-time leading goalscorer and a key figure in their 2023 World Cup triumph, has been left out of the squad for the upcoming UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 in Germany.

Coach Montse Tomé explained the decision, citing strong competition for places in Hermoso’s position.

“I spoke with Jenni earlier this year,” Tomé said on Tuesday. “We evaluated her season at Tigres, consulted with her club coach, and made our decision based on what we need from the squad.”

Hermoso, 35, has seen limited national team action in recent months. Her last appearance was in friendlies against Italy and Canada in October, and she was part of the squad for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The forward also drew global attention last year after former Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales kissed her without consent during the World Cup trophy ceremony—a moment that led to Rubiales being convicted of sexual assault.

Despite Hermoso’s achievements, Tomé highlighted the depth of talent available: “Patri Guijarro, Maite Zubieta, Alexia Putellas, Aitana Bonmatí, Vicky López, Mariona Caldentey, and Claudia Pina can all fill similar roles. It’s never easy to pick just 23.”

Spain are in Group B alongside Portugal, Belgium, and Italy. They’ll face Japan in a warm-up match on June 27 before opening their campaign against Portugal on July 3.
