For the first time in history, the FIFA Club World Cup is set to feature 32 teams, with host nation USA represented by Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami. The tournament will kick off with the opening match featuring Inter Miami facing Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli. According to Bangladesh Standard Time, the tournament begins early tomorrow morning. This will be Messi’s fourth appearance in a Club World Cup, but his first time participating outside of a European club.
Messi Ready but Realistic
Inter Miami, featuring superstars Messi and Luis Suárez, have had a mixed run of form recently. As a result, the Argentine legend has chosen to stay grounded in terms of expectations. However, Messi is still optimistic and motivated:
“It’s an exciting tournament. Playing here will be thrilling, but the mindset is different compared to facing traditional European clubs. That said, I still have full strength and hope, and regardless of the opponent, we aim to give our best performance.”
New Format for a Bigger Stage
Expanding from 7 teams to 32, FIFA has introduced a completely new format for the Club World Cup. The tournament now features a group stage followed by a knockout round, similar to the World Cup.
Messi praised the broader scope of competition:
“This is a great opportunity for clubs from South America and around the world to compete against European powerhouses. These clubs set global benchmarks and feature some of the best footballers. It will be a special experience for both players and fans.”
Messi’s Club World Cup Legacy
Messi has previously competed in three editions of the Club World Cup during his prime years with Barcelona, winning the title in 2009, 2011, and 2015. Now, even as he moves into the twilight of his career, he aims to make an impact with Inter Miami.
Inter Miami are drawn into Group A, alongside Al-Ahli, Brazilian side Palmeiras, and Portuguese giants Porto.
Tournament Format & Fixtures
The 32 teams are divided into eight groups of four. The top two teams from each group will advance to the knockout rounds, leading to a series of high-voltage matches en route to the final.
The final will be held on July 13 at the iconic MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Matches throughout the tournament will be played across 12 venues in 11 cities across the United States.
Inter Miami’s Schedule
Messi’s Inter Miami will face Al-Ahli at 6 AM (BST) tomorrow at their home ground, Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. They’ll then face Porto on June 20, and wrap up the group stage against Palmeiras on June 24. Inter Miami is one of three MLS clubs participating in this expanded edition of FIFA’s mega tournament.
The stage is set for a historic Club World Cup, and all eyes will be on Messi as he leads Inter Miami into this new global challenge.
