Marta, one of the greatest footballers in the history of the women’s game, will once again don the Brazil jersey. The 39-year-old legend has been recalled to the national squad with an eye on the Copa America, set to take place two months from now.
Marta has been included in Brazil’s squad for the upcoming two friendly matches against Japan. She had bid farewell to international football after the Paris Olympics last August, where Brazil lost 1-0 to the United States in the final, settling for a third silver medal. Since then, she had not appeared for the national team—until now.
Hints of her return had surfaced earlier when she signed a new two-year deal with her club, Orlando Pride, in January. She has been playing for the U.S.-based club since 2017 and is currently enjoying another strong season.
Brazil’s head coach, Arthur Elias, has also called up several young players as he begins shaping the team for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. He believes Marta’s experience and presence are still invaluable to both the team and the younger players.
“I recently met with Marta and spoke to her. She’s still performing at a very high level and is ready to continue contributing to the national team,” said Elias.
He added, “Marta is in excellent form this season and is playing a key role for a club that is a U.S. league champion. Having someone like her around is crucial for the development of the young talents in the squad.”
Brazil will face Japan at home on May 30 and June 2, followed by a match against France on June 27. The final squad for the Copa América will be announced before the France game.
The 10th edition of the Women’s Copa América will be held in Ecuador from July 12 to August 2. Brazil has dominated the tournament historically, winning 8 out of the previous 9 editions. Argentina claimed the only other title, back in 2006.
