Argentina reveal squad, Messi is back

Lionel Messi is set to return to the Argentina national team for their upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Chile and Colombia, the Argentine Football Association has confirmed.

The 37-year-old Inter Miami forward was sidelined in March due to a groin injury but is now back in contention. Despite his absence, Argentina managed to defeat both Uruguay and Brazil, continuing their strong campaign toward qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

Argentina will face Chile away on June 5, followed by a home clash in Buenos Aires against sixth-placed Colombia on June 10.

After fulfilling his national team duties, Messi will return to the United States, where Inter Miami will face Egyptian club Al Ahly in the opening match of the Club World Cup on June 14.

Also making a return to the squad is Manchester United forward Alejandro Garnacho, who had been omitted from recent matches for tactical reasons. Head coach Lionel Scaloni has brought him back into the fold for these crucial fixtures.

However, defender Nicolás Otamendi and midfielders Enzo Fernández and Leandro Paredes will be unavailable for the first match due to suspension, though all three are included in the 28-man squad.

Injuries have ruled out Paulo Dybala and Gonzalo Montiel, while coach Scaloni has chosen to leave out defenders Marcos Acuña and Germán Pezzella from this international window.

Argentina currently sit in a strong position in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying and will look to solidify their place in the upcoming matches with Messi back at the helm.
