Luka Modrić has officially announced that he will leave Real Madrid following the conclusion of the FIFA Club World Cup. The Ballon d’Or-winning midfielder shared the news via an Instagram message on Thursday.
He confirmed that Saturday’s La Liga match against Real Sociedad will be his final appearance at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Since joining Real Madrid in 2012, Modrić has spent 13 illustrious years with the club, during which he won an astounding 28 trophies — including six UEFA Champions League titles and four La Liga championships. He has made 590 appearances in a Real Madrid shirt.
Reflecting on his journey, Modrić wrote:
“I came with the hope of wearing the shirt of the best club in the world and the ambition to achieve something great. But what actually happened, I could never have imagined. Playing for Real Madrid has changed both my football career and my life.”
In a football era dominated by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, Modrić stood out as the only player outside of that legendary rivalry to win the Ballon d’Or in 2018, recognizing his extraordinary impact on both club and international football.
