Real Madrid wrapped up their La Liga campaign with a 2–0 victory over Real Sociedad at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday (May 24). But beyond the scoreline, it was a night filled with emotion, marking the end of an era for the Spanish giants.
The match served as a farewell for three iconic figures at the club — legendary coach Carlo Ancelotti, midfield maestro Luka Modric, and long-time servant Lucas Vazquez. Ancelotti, the most successful coach in Real Madrid’s history, and Modric, who orchestrated the midfield for 12 years, received heartfelt send-offs alongside Vazquez.
Adding brilliance to the occasion was Kylian Mbappe, the face of Madrid’s new era. The French star scored a goal in each half, securing the win and further cementing his place as La Liga’s top scorer. With 31 goals in 34 matches, Mbappe has all but secured the Pichichi Trophy, well ahead of Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski, who has 25 goals in 33 matches. Mbappe is also set to claim the European Golden Boot.
Madrid finished the season with 84 points from 38 matches, including 26 wins and 6 draws. However, despite the strong finish, they ended as runners-up, as Barcelona clinched the title earlier with 85 points from one game fewer.
Before kickoff, the Bernabeu became the stage for a deeply emotional farewell ceremony. Fans held up placards, shed tears, and sang tributes in honor of Ancelotti and Modric. The club organized a touching farewell to recognize their immense contributions to Real Madrid’s legacy.
