Wirtz Way to Liverpool for 140 Million

Bayern Munich president Herbert Hainer once confidently declared, “We’ll compete with Man City and Liverpool,” in reference to signing Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz. As Germany’s biggest club and a traditional home for German talents, Bayern had reason to believe they could land the 22-year-old star.

However, Hainer has now admitted defeat: “We accept we’ve lost this one. Max Eberl (Sporting Director) has informed us that Wirtz is heading to Liverpool. We don’t know the exact terms of the agreement with Leverkusen.”

According to a report by Goal, Wirtz has agreed to join Liverpool, allegedly stating, “I will only go to Liverpool.” His family has also approved the move and is reportedly impressed by the project presented by new Liverpool manager Arne Slot.

To sign the young German, Liverpool will have to make a significant financial commitment. Leverkusen is demanding around €140 million, and Sky Sports reports that the deal is likely to be finalized in that range.

However, part of the fee might be offset through player exchanges. Leverkusen is planning to strengthen its squad for next season with a midfielder, striker, defender, and goalkeeper. Meanwhile, Liverpool is open to selling striker Darwin Nunez. Irish goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, who wants regular playing time, is also likely to leave, and midfielder Wataru Endo could be made available as part of the deal.

The transfer, if finalized, would be one of the marquee moves of the summer, marking a major win for Liverpool and Arne Slot’s new era.
