Southampton Set Embarrassing Record

Southampton had already been relegated before their final Premier League match of the 2024–25 season. But the Saints were hoping to sign off on a positive note. Instead, they suffered another defeat — and set an unwanted record in the process.

On Sunday night at St Mary’s Stadium, Southampton fell 2–1 to a strong Arsenal side. With the result, Southampton became the first club in Premier League history to lose 30 matches in a single season. They finished the campaign bottom of the table with just 12 points.

Arsenal, on the other hand, wrapped up their season in second place for the third year in a row. The Gunners ended with 74 points — 10 behind champions Liverpool.

After the match, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said:
“We wanted to finish the season on a positive note, and we did. A huge thank-you to the fans — the way they’ve supported the team and the club has been incredible. Their passion and energy have been amazing. Now we want to take another step forward, and we’re very excited about that.”

Left-back Kieran Tierney opened the scoring for Arsenal in the 43rd minute in what was his farewell match for the club. He scored from a Ben White cutback.

Southampton equalized in the 56th minute through Ross Stewart. Arsenal kept pressing and even had a Bukayo Saka goal ruled out for offside. The match appeared to be heading for Arsenal’s 15th draw of the season — until substitute Martin Ødegaard scored a stunning long-range goal in the 89th minute to seal the 2–1 win.

Meanwhile, Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya ended the season on a high note, claiming the Premier League Golden Glove for the second straight year. He shared the honor with Nottingham Forest’s Matz Sels — both keepers recorded 13 clean sheets this season.

“I’m very pleased with my performance this year,” Raya said. “I feel I’ve improved from last season and adapted more to the club. I just want to keep doing my job and contribute as much as I can to the team.”
